The Grow Your Own Look - Guy Bennington
Looking to add a new touch to your kitchen? Want something that looks and tastes good? Then why not make room on your kitchen window sill for some pots of herbs? It’s great using fresh ingredients in your cooking, and herbs are a perfect way to start. They’re easy to grow, and with their varied colours and textures, add a fab look to your kitchen.
You can get herb kits to grow indoors, that come with everything you need, or go get some herb seeds or small herb plants and find your own unique containers and pots-they can be colourful and don’t have to be the conventional ‘terracotta’ look. Basil, chives, parsley and coriander make a good collection.
Apart from herbs, the overlooked cress is really easy and quick to grow, and add a peppery taste to sandwiches and salads.
I love chillies- you get loads on a plant, they’re colourful, so look good, and an essential ingredient for lots of recipies.
Cut and come again salad leaves really pay their way. They’ll keep going for months. Again, with their variety of leaf shape and colour, they will also enhance your kitchen look.
Don’t forget to water the plants regularly, as they will dry out quicker indoors.
Who knows, if you get the ‘grow your own’ bug, you’ll soon be growing tomatoes and other veg in pots on your patio-and saving money, while getting lots of satisfaction from cooking with your own home grown produce!
