Kitchen Lighting Tips - Rex Finch

A tip I learnt from a lighting designer friend:

"The most important thing is to hide the source."

What does this mean?

The most effective lighting designs will, obviously, light the room and it's tasks aesthetically, but the source of the light, i.e the lamp or blub itself, will not be visible. If you can see the actual bulb it will be very bright. This will detract from the contrast between that point source and the things it is illuminating. Less contrast = less effect.

So, how do you hide the source and what sort of light fitting will do that effectively.

    1.    Undercounter lighting. By it's very nature, any lighting that is installed under the high level cabinets in your Kitchen will be very hard to see, unless you lie on the floor. These are cheap, can be installed flush or surface and are all you need.

There are more expensive options with more 'design' if you need it, but you don't, you can't see them!

2. On top of the high level cupboards. Like I said in my last missive, I think this is essential for a good looking kitchen. Light the ceiling, make the room look bigger. Again, because they are on top of the high level cupboards, not even your tallest friend will be able to see them. You could use something like the fitting above or a simple strip light also works very effectively. You can buy them in a range of lengths to suit your cupboards too.

Or this LED strip will make your life really easy:

3. Wall lights. These are very effective when lighting a kitchen - they generally cast light up and down; they don't take up any space; they are usually dimmable.

4. On your sills, shelves and ledges, carefully planned with your other bric -a-brac and accessories..These are pretty cool too, for the windowsill:

On last thing: Always use a qualified electrician!
