Diary of a Small kitchen page 1 - Dickie Welsford
Measure for Pleasure.
I am currently in the throws of equipping my narrow galley bachelor kitchen with the essentials tools for making a cracking good munch.
I dragged my dear Cyster around the pre-crimbo scrum in the kitchenware department at Selfridges last Saturday, the mission: measuring spoons. A simple enough sortie you might suppose, but once ensconced we were faced with a bewildering multitude of different designs: metal, or plastic, or combination, nested dumbbell designs or Russian doll stylee, square spoons, round bowl shaped or long slender shovel shapes (ideal for poking around narrow necked bottles).
After much deliberation & exhaustive discussion on the relative merits of each offering under the sweltering glare of the halogen shop lighting, we set off for the till, selection in hand, until, that is, a clear glass beauty caught my eye.
Enter Pyrex stage right.
A wee shot glass with the different calibrations marked in distinctive red ink on the side. Genius. Why have 16 different spoons when one will do? No need to wash-up the whole shooting match as in the case of the ring bound set, if all you need is two teaspoons of you fave. spice? Not too much detail to harbour dirt & germs, spot on, for a paltry £1.50. Spot on. All hail the Pyrex!
